Writing Cold Cases: Using New Science With Old Evidence

Cold cases are investigations that reached the limits of what science, human law enforcement resources, and low budgets could offer at the time the crimes were committed. 

Evidence was collected, preserved, and documented. Leads were followed. Witnesses were interviewed. Then progress stopped. For various reasons, but not because investigators stopped caring. Often they didn’t have the manpower, the finances to continue, or the right science to connect found evidence to suspects.

Criminal cases started being formally recorded somewhere in the early 1800s and as late as the early 1900s in the U.S. When an investigation went cold, it remained suspended in time. Families waited, and even died off. Files gathered dust. Evidence sat quietly in storage, labeled and preserved for a future look… that may or may not come.

That future has arrived.

Advances in forensic science, DNA analysis, forensic genealogy, and digital technology are fundamentally changing what cold case forensics can accomplish… even under the burden of limited human and financial resources. 

Evidence once considered dead end, is now being reexamined with methods that did not exist when the crimes were committed. 

This shift has implications for real investigations and for how crime stories are written and understood.

What Makes a Case Go Cold

A cold case is not a failure. It is a pause.

Cases typically go cold when all available leads have been exhausted using the science, databases, and investigative strategies available at the time. 

In older cases, progress is often stalled because investigators lacked manpower to continue and had to move on to other priority cases. Lack of funding is also a major factor in how many resources can be allocated to a case. And of course, the forensic tools needed to confirm or eliminate suspects simply may not have existed to analyze evidence. 

Common forensic limitations in the past included:

  • DNA testing that required large, clean samples
  • Inability to interpret mixed DNA from multiple contributors
  • No national DNA databases for comparison
  • Fingerprint systems that were jurisdiction-specific
  • Reliance on eyewitness testimony or confessions that could not be corroborated
  • Lack of direct evidence (photos, videos, audio recordings)

In many cases, investigators did the right thing by preserving evidence even when it could not be tested. That decision is the reason many cases can now be reopened.

DNA Then and DNA Now

DNA testing as used in police investigations entered forensic science in the late 1980s and gained momentum in the early 1990s, but early testing was blunt compared to modern methods. Samples had to be relatively large and intact. Degraded biological material often produced no usable profile. Mixed samples were frequently uninterpretable.

Modern DNA analysis operates very differently.

Today, forensic laboratories can:

  • Extract DNA from extremely small or degraded samples
  • Separate mixed DNA into individual contributor profiles
  • Reanalyze evidence that previously yielded inconclusive results
  • Generate partial profiles that still have investigative value

This matters because in the past, evidence collected was often susceptible to being compromised. Time, environmental exposure, and improper handling all degrade biological material. DNA samples that were once considered unusable may now be viable.

It’s also important to note that in cold case forensics, DNA rarely delivers a final answer on its own. However, it can create a new lead or corroborate circumstantial evidence, building a stronger case in an arrest and conviction of a suspect.

Forensic Genealogy and the Family Tree Effect

The recent explosion of Forensic genealogy has miraculously transformed how identification of missing persons, victims and suspects solve cold cases.

Traditional DNA databases depend on pairing known with unknown samples. If the DNA of a suspect who has never been arrested is not in the database, the database returns nothing. There is nothing to connect this suspect to a crime. 

Forensic genealogy helps this out. Investigators can search a DNA profile to public genealogy databases, in hopes of connecting the found DNA to that of a suspect’s blood relatives.

From there, genealogists work to connect the dots… building family trees, often working backward through generations to find the person in question. 

The process is slow and labor-intensive. It requires careful documentation and legal oversight. It is not a shortcut, and it does not guarantee arrest or prosecution. But it has served to find criminals and connect them to their crimes, therefore resolving cases stalled for decades.

Forensic genealogy has limitations. It raises ethical and privacy questions. And not all public DNA databases permit law enforcement use. Often investigators must gain consent, transparency, and judicial approval.

Evidence Triage in Cold Case Reviews

When a cold case is reopened, investigators do not test everything at once. Evidence triage is critical, both for scientific validity and resource management. Testing decisions must account for laboratory backlogs, cost, and the likelihood that certain items will produce interpretable results.

Investigators assess:

  • What evidence still exists
  • How it was stored over time
  • Whether chain of custody is intact
  • Which items are most likely to yield results with modern testing

This review process often exposes limitations. Some evidence might be lost, contaminated, or destroyed. Some packaging might have failed to protect biological material. Documentation may be incomplete, and witnesses may no longer be available.

Other Advances In Technology

Cold case breakthroughs rarely hinge on a single dramatic test. 

Advances in technology now allow investigators to:

  • Digitize and enhance old photographs and video footage
  • Reanalyze fingerprints using modern algorithms
  • Cross-reference records across jurisdictions instantly
  • Recover data from obsolete storage formats
  • Reconstruct timelines using modern mapping tools

These tools extend the life of older evidence. 

A partial fingerprint is now searchable across national systems. 

An enhanced grainy photograph may reveal a vehicle detail, a storefront sign, or a geographic marker previously overlooked. 

Digital record integration can expose connections that were impossible to identify when files were siloed across agencies and decades.

Why New Science Still Has Limits

Technology does not replace good, old fashioned investigation. 

DNA can place a person in contact with an object or a victim. But it cannot explain intent, consent, motive, or circumstance. 

Forensic genealogy can identify a suspect or narrow a pool of possibilities. It cannot, on its own, establish guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.

Every scientific result still requires:

  • Corroboration
  • Legal admissibility
  • Context
  • Human judgment

Even when new testing produces a name, investigators must still reconstruct timelines, establish opportunity, and rule out alternative explanations. Some cold cases remain unresolved after reexamination because suspects are deceased, evidence is insufficient to meet prosecutorial standards, or statutes of limitation apply. 

Science expands what is possible in an investigation, but it does not resolve the legal and ethical constraints that determine whether justice can be pursued or not.

What This Means for Crime Writers

Cold case forensics are often misrepresented in fiction as a single revelatory moment. In reality, investigations present and past are built on the incremental piecing together of many trails of evidence. And as always, we have to remember that forensics is science applied to law. Just because new technology makes something old now identifiable, doesn’t always mean it’s courtroom allowable. 

If you are writing cold cases, consider these realities:

Evidence Was Preserved With Intention
Earlier investigators often saved evidence specifically because they believed future science might help. Treat that decision as purposeful, not negligent.

Breakthroughs Create Work
A new DNA result raises questions about timeline, opportunity, and motive. It rarely resolves a case on its own.

Old Assumptions Get Challenged
Cold case reviews frequently expose tunnel vision, missed leads, or biases that shaped early conclusions.

Closure Is Rarely Complete
Answers may arrive without arrests or convictions. Justice can be partial, delayed, or symbolic. Use these constraints to deepen a character’s emotional tension rather than flatten it.

As forensic science continues to advance, we look forward to the possibility that more cold cases will find resolution and justice. 

For writers, we can use this opportunity to tell stories that offer a deep understanding of how justice evolves with the heartbreak of lapsed time, and the miracle of new technology.
