Every story has a heartbeat that pulses from a special inspiration. For me, Frozen Lives, the fourth book in The Coroner’s Daughter series, beats to the rhythm of my childhood along the Lake Michigan coastline. This place not only gave me my fantastic forensic foundation, but also bred in me the universal themes of resilience and redemption.
I’m inviting you in this blog post to step behind the curtain and discover the real-life experiences and meticulous research that shaped this book. We’ll explore how those elements come together to bring Emily Hartford’s latest adventure to life, from the icy landscapes to the chilling crime she must unravel.
From Fremont to Fiction: The Michigan Connection
The world of Frozen Lives is deeply rooted in my own upbringing in Fremont, Michigan, a small town nestled in the rural northwest corner of what we Michiganders affectionately call “the mitten.” Growing up in the country, surrounded by fields, forests, and the vast expanse of Lake Michigan, instilled in me a deep appreciation for the beauty and complexity of small-town life.
But my childhood was anything but ordinary. You see, my home wasn’t just a place for family dinners and homework sessions; it was also the headquarters for my father’s rather unique profession. He was a physician, yes, but he was also the medical examiner for three counties. And without funding for an official office, his workspace was our home. [No, he didn’t do post-mortems there. Those happened at the local hospital morgue.]
Can you imagine? While other kids were playing with dolls and building forts, I was getting a firsthand look at the intricacies of death investigation and forensic science. It was a unique upbringing, to say the least, but it instilled in me a fascination with forensic science, a deep respect for the dead and great empathy for their survivors. It showed me that the smallest details can tell a powerful story.
Fremont was also a place where everyone knew everyone else’s business (whether you wanted them to or not!). Anonymity was a luxury no one had dibs on. That sense of community, where lives are deeply interwoven, permeates Frozen Lives. The story’s small-town setting mirrors the close-knit fabric of my own hometown, a place where every crime sends ripples through the entire community, and every character has a role to play in the unfolding drama.
And let’s not forget those icy landscapes! The winters in northern Michigan are harsh, isolating, and breathtakingly beautiful. They create an atmosphere that’s both alluring and ominous, perfect for a story of suspense and hidden secrets and investigative obstacles! As Emily Hartford investigates a chilling crime amidst subzero conditions, the frozen environment becomes as much a character as any of the people in the book, adding another layer of complexity and intrigue to the narrative.
Forensic Threads: When Science Meets Storytelling
One of the things I love most about writing The Coroner’s Daughter series is the opportunity to weave authentic forensic science into the fabric of the story. My training at the Forensic Science Academy in Los Angeles gave me a deeper understanding of crime scene investigation, but it was my childhood experiences that first sparked my fascination with this field.
Watching my father piece together the stories of the deceased, using science to speak for those who could no longer speak for themselves, instilled in me a profound appreciation for the power of forensic investigation. It’s not just about facts and figures; it’s about uncovering the truth, about giving a voice to the voiceless.
In Frozen Lives, I drew on real forensic techniques to create a mystery that feels both gripping and grounded in reality. For example, the book explores how frozen bodies decompose, a detail inspired by actual cases where subzero temperatures preserved crucial evidence. Also, good old fashioned detecting plays a pivotal role in the story to find not only the killer, but the live victims he’s been hiding in the woods. Emily always has to work hand in hand with local detectives and this is what builds an impactful emotional journey behind the forensic details.
Resilience and Redemption: The Emotional Core
At its heart, Frozen Lives is a story about resilience and redemption, about the human capacity to endure, heal, and find hope even in the darkest of circumstances. This is actually my mission statement for all of my life and writing. I seek to shed light and hope into the dark recesses of the human experience.
This a deeply personal theme for me, and it resonates throughout every book in th The Coroner’s Daughter series. For there is no circumstance so dire that redemption can not touch. I believe that in fiction and in life.
The theme of redemption is present in the characters of Frozen Lives. In fact, the title has multiple meanings. Not only are there a few frozen bodies to discover. But all of the characters are frozen emotionally by something troubling in their lives. Emily is frozen in her choice to stay in Chicago or return to Freeport and build a life there. Jo and Paul have a frozen marriage and need to thaw out for it to survive. Delia has been stuck in retirement life, hiding away her frozen heart that needs to thaw so it can love again.
Building Emily Hartford: A Protagonist Rooted in Reality
Emily Hartford is more than just a character on the page; she’s a reflection of the experiences my two sisters and I had growing up around death investigations. Her role as a coroner in a rural community echoes the work my father did as medical examiner. But her emotional life mirrors the way my mother sewed lovingly into the community as my dad’s right hand. Emily’s personal journey is a prodigal daughter tale. It’s about a girl who’s trying to find her way home and it’s often messy and complicated as she tries to navigate former relationships and try to secure her true north between two worlds.
The Creative Journey: From Idea to Manuscript
Writing Frozen Lives started with the question… what if I put Jo and her family in danger and Emily has to return to Freeport to save them? We end book three, Last One Alive, with the news that Jo’s oldest son has gone missing. And we pick up book four with Emily racing back to Freeport, from Chicago, to join a search party for her best friend’s son.
After that… Well, I don’t want to give it away, but let’s just say, every parent’s worst nightmare ensues when Emily uncovers a sinister plot behind the disappearance. From there, the story races to the finish line (or so I’m told by readers who loved it!).
Research played a crucial role in shaping the story. From employing death investigation of bodies found in ice, to interviewing experts on PTSD, and talking with parents about what they would do if their child went missing? The most rewarding part of the process was hearing from readers that I hit the bull’s eye! Moms have reached out to tell me how emotionally invested they were in Emily and Jo’s horrific journey and eventual avengement.
Conclusion: An Invitation to Explore Frozen Lives
Frozen Lives is more than just a thriller; it’s a story about resilience, redemption, and the enduring human spirit. It’s a testament to the power of community and the importance of family.
As you step into the icy world of Frozen Lives, I hope you’ll feel the heartbeat of the story as it takes you on a wild, thrilling ride. I can’t wait to hear your thoughts on Emily’s latest adventure.
