Jennifer’s Top 5 Crime Reads of the Year

Why We Love The Enduring Power of Crime Fiction

There’s something irresistible about a great crime story. Whether it’s the slow-burn tension of a psychological thriller, the methodical unraveling of a detective procedural, or the cozy charm of an amateur sleuth, or a medieval knight solving a historical whodunit, mysteries keep us turning pages late into the night.

For me, crime stories are more than just entertainment—they’re my calling. As a crime writer and forensic expert, I spend my days constructing mysteries from the inside out, thinking about evidence, suspects, and red herrings. But I also spend a good portion of my downtime reading some of the best crime stories out there, constantly in awe of how vast the creative world can be!

So, what is it that makes crime stories so compelling?

The Psychology of Why We Love Crime

We crave puzzles. A well-written mystery challenges the reader to piece together clues, making the reading experience interactive.

Justice is served. Chaos is ordered. In reality, justice isn’t always served, but in fiction, we get satisfying resolutions—sometimes with moral ambiguity, but always with purpose.

Suspense keeps us engaged. Experiencing danger from the safety of a book gives us an adrenaline rush without real-world consequences.

Crime fiction has been one of the best-selling genres for decades. According to a 2023 report by Publishers Weekly, mystery and thriller books consistently rank among the top three best-selling genres, alongside romance and fantasy (Publishers Weekly, 2023).

Below are my top five mystery reads of the year—each one unique, gripping, unforgettable and down right entertaining!
